At 37.5 km, the Degirmendere Aqueduct of Ephesus is the longest and youngest of the six long-distance aqueducts that brought spring water to Ephesus. It is a gravity-fed conduit that ran through all the valleys and crossed 24 bridges and through four tunnels. This two-volume study documents the process and results of the long-term archaeological work on this aqueduct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first volume contains information on the history of research and a description of the individual sections, bridges and other structures from the source to the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second volume covers the geology of the surrounding area, the construction, maintenance, and repair of the aqueduct, the sinter deposits, the calculation of flow rates, dating considerations, and post-antique use from the late Byzantine period to the present day. The concluding remarks outline open questions and the implications for research on Ephesus. The appendix contains further information on research methodology and other aqueducts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
