Nine like-minded gentlemen met on October 16, 1976, in the “Professorenstübchen” (Professors’ Lounge) at the Haus der Technik in Essen to establish a technical-historical society, the Frontinus Society.
At the international Water Congress in Berlin, the first Frontinus Medal will be awarded to Mr. Haberey, a full-time employee of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Bonn, who has made a special contribution to the study of Roman aqueducts.
The first edition of the book “The Water Supply in Ancient Rome,” published by the Frontinus Society, is published.
Dr. Fritz Gläser will succeed Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Naber and will lead the Frontinus Society as president for 13 years.
At the general meeting in Cologne, the statutes were revised. The Frontinus Society was transformed into a scientific association. The executive committee now consisted of three members. The association’s activities were expanded beyond pipeline technology to include the fields of energy and water technology.
During Dr. Gläser’s term, the membership grew to 300. On February 22, 1995, Herbert Oster, Dipl.-Kfm., assumed the presidency for the next seven years.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hans Mehlhorn has been President of the Frontinus Society since November 20, 2002. During his first years in office, he stabilized the association both in terms of personnel and finances.
Since 2002, the German Association of the Gas and Water Sector has provided the Frontinus Society not only with office and storage space, but also with an employee who takes over the association’s operational business.
The DVGW also provides Petra Fricke as its secretary. The library is also in good hands with the DVGW. It contains numerous scientific and historical publications, some of which are from the estate of publisher and Frontinus member Udo Pfriemer.
The long-standing collaboration with, among others, the Austrian Archaeological Institute was expressed on 3 April 2006 in the change of the association’s name to “Frontinus Society e.V. International Society for Water and Energy”
The completely revised new edition of the first volume in the book series “Water Supply in Ancient Rome” is published.
At the general meeting on 27 May 2016, the association’s name was again corrected to: “Frontinus Society e.V. International Society for the History of Water, Energy and Pipeline Technology”
Following Petra Fricke’s retirement, the office will now be headed by Sabine Hemker, who will manage it from her home in Bad Wimpfen near Heilbronn.
