Online lecture

Cordial Invitation

to the Online Lecture (ZOOM) on 09.01.2025, 6:00 pm (CET)

Dr. Tsvika Tsuk
The Ancient Water System of Sepphoris
(Lecture in English)

Tsvika Tsuk is an emeritus chief archaeologist of Israel Nature and Parks Authority, where he worked for 25 years. His main goals were to control and supervise archaeological excavations and to orient them towards conservation and touristic development. Thus, many sites in Israel were opened to the public after these works. He conducted research and excavations in many ancient water systems in Israel. Tsvika Tsuk has been a member of Frontinus Society since the conference in 1983 in Jerusalem. He was the field archaeologist of two projects in cooperation with Frontinus Society and the universities in Israel: The aqueducts to Jericho in 1985 (with Prof. Garbrecht and Prof. Netzer) and the aqueduct to Susita in 1993 (with Prof. Fahlbusch and Dr. Meshel). In addition, he also organized a society conference in Israel in 2001. His last publication is on the extended project of the water system of Sepphoris. He intends to publish shortly another project report about his excavations with the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary: The Canaanite Water System at Gezer.

The Subterranean Reservoir at Sepphoris

Tsvika Tsuk about his lecture:

From 1975 till 2019 I conducted research on the water supply system to Sepphoris, an important ancient city located in the Lower Galilee in northern Israel.

The system is of small size, with four aqueducts dated from the Roman and the early Byzantine periods (1st-7 st centuries AD). The aqueducts include many installations like: spring house, bridge, tunnels, high walls to maintain nearly uniform elevation, reservoirs and pools.

The excavations discovered some very nice artifacts. Five years after the last field season, in April 2024, I published the final report of this project.
