Water in the Holy Land

Biblical evidence and archaeological research

Frontinus Supplement - Band 3

Autor: Wiel Dierx and Günther Garbrecht

This publication examines the sacred and secular relationships of people living in the geographical area of the Holy Land during biblical times with the natural element of water. The compiled relevant biblical texts are each commented on from the perspective of the history of technology. It demonstrates that the daily struggle for water, essential for life and survival in the arid and semi-arid climatic conditions of the region, is much more closely interwoven with the religious, mythical, and spiritual aspects of the primordial element of water in the realm of faith than is commonly assumed.

The considerations are supplemented and deepened by the presentation of new archaeological research results on the historical water supply systems of biblical cities, including Jerusalem, Jericho, Qumran and Masada.
