Dr. Manfred Hainzmann
Online-Konkordanzen und -Indizes zu Frontins De aquaeductu urbis Romae
(Lecture in German)

After studying Classical Archaeology, Ancient History and Classical Philology, Manfred Hainzmann was Assistant Professor at the Karl-Franzens-University of Graz until 2011, where he received his doctorate in 1973 with a dissertation on “Investigations into the history and administration of the Roman water mains in the city”. His main areas of research are provincial Roman history and Latin epigraphy, with an emphasis (since 1999) on Celtic religion. In 1984 he spent six months in Rome at the Università La Sapienza. His most recent publications are “Zur Kapitolinischen Wasserleitung des Q. Marcius Rex” (Grazer Beiträge 6, 1977, 27-37) and “Sextus Iulius Frontinus. Wasser für Rom. Die Wasserversorgung durch Aquädukte” (translated and annotated from the Latin, Zurich 1979). He is a correspondent member of the Austrian Archaeological Institute and coordinator of the international research project “Fontes Epigraphici Religionum Celticarum Antiquarum” of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

Abstract:

Until now, only printed concordances, indices and lexicons have been used to catalogue the vocabulary of ancient authors. In 1985, the Olms-Weidmann publishing house published the first Frontini Index, compiled by the Spaniard J. Costas Rodriguez, which includes the contents of three works attributed to Sextus Iulius Frontinus and is based on the Editio Teubneriana by C. Kunderewicz. In the meantime, three new editions of De aquaeductu urbis Romae have been published: first by W. Letzner and W. Merkel (2013), then the Italian edition by F. del Chicca (2004) and, in the same year, the English edition by R. H. Rodgers. Based on the edition by Letzner and Merkel, the Frontinus Society can now offer an online version with K(ey)W(ord)I(n)C(ontext) indices, i.e. concordances, as well as various word and subject indices. For this purpose I compared the word material of five editions (including P. Grimal, 1961) and checked for different readings. The variae lectiones I have diagnosed are indicated by their own diacritical marks and are also listed separately in a subject index. In this way, in addition to the colour highlighting of the insertions and readings in the full-text data sheet, the user is shown not only the word material itself, but also its classification as an added, corrected or declared surplus document form.
