Volume 4: Die Wasserversorgung im Mittelalter

Book series „History of water supply“ - Band 4

The 1000-year history of water supply from the 5th to the 15th century is the subject of this volume, which spans the traditional engineering achievements of antiquity, through early Christian cult buildings, monasteries and palaces, to the cities of the High and Late Middle Ages.

Using a variety of exemplary water supply systems, this is the first ever technical-historical overview of the supply of the vital element of water to people in urban and rural areas. The volume is complemented by an illustrated appendix featuring a series of typical water supply systems with explanatory texts, demonstrating the state of knowledge and performance of this era. Systems in England, France, Austria, Switzerland, and Germany are presented. A facsimile plan of the water supply of Christchurch Abbey in Canterbury from the 12th century is included.
